Ever been on a website only to find that its content is boring, inaccurate, and outdated?

Creating fresh, relevant content (and regularly updating it) is your ticket to standing out from the crowd. Doing it right gets you ahead in the search engine results and keeps your target audience engaged and happy.

It might sound like a lot of work, especially if you have a big website or are in a fast-paced industry where new trends emerge every day.

Trust me, though: It’s worth the time and investment.

In this article, I’ll explain why fresh content is so important, how it benefits your SEO strategy, and ways to refresh your content even when you’re crunched for time.

Key Takeaways

  • Fresh content is any new or recently updated content on a website.
  • Regularly updated content means more backlinks, a better user experience, and improved experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) signals. All can lead to higher search engine rankings.
  • Content freshness is a certified Google ranking factor, meaning updated content stands a better chance of ranking higher in the search engine results.
  • Reviewing page performance and staying on top of industry trends can help you determine which pages to refresh.
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) content generators can help you create fresh content quickly, but it’s vital to check your content for accuracy and weave your own expertise and experiences into your work.

What Is Fresh Content?

Fresh content is any type of content (for example, blog posts, news articles, videos, case studies, or infographics) that is either:

  • Recently published
  • Recently updated with the latest information—even some evergreen content needs regular refreshing to stay relevant

Let’s say you search Google for the latest AI news. Google’s news feed tells you when each piece of relevant content was published so you can read the most recent articles.

On my blog, the author box at the top of each article shows when the content was published or last updated, so readers know how up-to-date it is.

How “fresh” should fresh content be? It depends on the topic or industry.

For example, a brand that publishes information about a fast-moving topic like digital marketing or AI may need to post fresh content daily. However, a more niche industry or topic might be able to get away with publishing fresh content weekly or monthly.

Later in this article, I’ll share my tips for choosing the right content to create or freshen up. I’ll also show you how to time your fresh content for the best results.

What Is the Difference Between Fresh and Frequent Content?

Some digital marketers refer to fresh and frequent content interchangeably, but the terms differ slightly. Here’s how:

  • Fresh content refers to both publishing new content and updating existing content. The goal is to keep it relevant and engaging.
  • Frequent content is about maintaining a regular publishing schedule for new content to keep visitors engaged and build brand awareness.

Ideally, you want to strike a balance between fresh and frequent content. Establish a consistent cadence and create relevant, valuable content.

Benefits of Fresh Content for SEO

Fresh content doesn’t just entertain, educate, and delight your target audience—it helps your SEO, too.

Here are some of the ways fresh content gives your SEO efforts a boost:

  • Regularly updated content encourages search engines to crawl your site more frequently, meaning you’re more likely to rank for new keywords.
  • High-quality, timely content provides a better user experience, which can positively affect SEO.
  • Relevant, authoritative, trustworthy content means your website is more likely to follow E-E-A-T guidelines, which shows your content provides value to visitors.
  • Fresh content appeals to other websites, meaning more backlinks and an improved search engine results page (SERP) presence.

Is Fresh Content a Google Ranking Factor?

Yes, fresh content is seemingly one of Google’s ranking factors

Leaked documentation from Google revealed that how recently a page was updated or uploaded plays a role in search engine rankings. Digital marketers suspected this for a long time but didn’t have proof.

Google looks at the dates in page bylines, URL structure, and the content itself to determine how fresh the content is. Content published more recently ranks higher as a result.

Google also tracks change history, so it knows when websites change the date on a piece of content without updating it to try and cheat the system.

How to Keep Content Fresh

Creating fresh content for SEO purposes doesn’t have to be hard. The trick is to stay organized and identify which content most benefits from refreshing.

Here’s how to implement a solid content refresh strategy.

Find Content Refresh Opportunities by Tracking Performance

When identifying what content to refresh on your website, I recommend starting with the pieces that are no longer getting traffic. This can indicate that the information is out of date and no longer relevant.

Use Google Analytics to review your pages over time. I recommend looking at a year’s worth of metrics to get an overall insight into how your content is doing. If your page views or average engagement time take a dive, that may be a sign that your content is due for a refresh.

Google Search Console is a fantastic tool, too. Go to Search Results and compare date ranges. If a page’s average click-through rate (CTR) drops or your average position for a specific keyword is low, fresh content might be exactly what your SEO efforts need.

Comparing date ranges in Google Search Console

Keeping up with industry trends and developments can help you identify whether your content has become (or will shortly become) out of date. You can then refresh it before it hurts your SERP presence.

For example, I follow Google across social media and regularly read The Keyword blog. When I find a story that affects the relevance of my own articles, I prioritize updating them with fresh content as soon as possible.

For example, if the piece on the AI prompting course above contained groundbreaking new tips, I could update one of my blog posts on using AI for content creation. I could, say, add in the latest prompting techniques or even work in a link to Google’s new course.

Here’s how you can follow trends and track the latest news in your industry:

  • Connect with thought leaders on social media and follow relevant hashtags.
  • Sign up for email newsletters.
  • Regularly visit news websites and blogs (or use an RSS reader to manage multiple news feeds).
  • Use Google Trends to see what keywords are popular with searchers.

Make Sure Your Updates Provide Value

Focus on quality rather than quantity when developing fresh content. It’s better to update one piece of content with critical information than spend the same amount of time making small changes to 10 different pieces of content.

Get to the heart of what your target audience wants to know and what info gives them the most value. A search listening tool like AnswerThePublic can help you answer those questions.

A simple query gives you a look at the real-life terms and questions people are typing into search engines. For example, let’s enter “google algorithm” into AnswerThePublic:

AnswerThePublic results for "Google algorithm"

This search tells us searchers want to know things like how AI or updates affect Google’s algorithm. From there, you could target relevant posts to update with the latest developments on those topics.

Also, consider user needs in the form of search intent. For example, is your target audience conducting research, reviewing different options, or are they ready to buy? This helps your content get the right results, whether that’s shares, backlinks, or sales.

Search intent breaks down into four types—informational, navigational, commercial, and transactional.

The four different types of search intent
  • Informational: The user is seeking information, answers, or knowledge about a specific topic (e.g., what is a tardigrade, how to make chocolate chip cookies).
  • Navigational: The user is looking for a specific website or online resource (e.g., Facebook login, Amazon Prime support).
  • Commercial: The user is reaching products or services before buying. They’re comparing options, reading reviews, and just generally gathering information (e.g., best Bluetooth speakers, iPhone vs. Android).
  • Transactional: The user wants to take a specific action (e.g., create Adobe account, download Ubersuggest plugin).

Offering expert opinions, linking to accredited sources of information, and showcasing your experience in the industry will show your target audience why they can trust your content.

Finally, ensure your fresh content is easy to read and understand. For example, if you’re refreshing a blog post, add headings, bullet points, and images to make it scannable.

Build a Content Calendar

Sometimes, you need to reactively create fresh content around an unexpected event. Other times, when you know what’s coming up, you have time to prepare.

For example, if you’re an e-commerce store getting ready for the holidays, you can create new and updated gift guides in advance.

The easiest way to proactively manage fresh content is through a content calendar. Check out the example below from HubSpot.

A content calendar plans out:

  • What content you will create
  • When you’ll post content
  • Who will create or update content
  • Where you’ll promote content

A content calendar provides accountability, maximizes your marketing efforts, and ensures a steady flow of fresh content throughout the year.

Find Opportunities to Implement AI

Generative AI can help you quickly create new content and update older content so you can publish up-to-date information ahead of your competitors.

Google advises that it’s OK to use AI to create content as long as what you create is original, high-quality, and provides value to readers.

If you want to use AI to create fresh content, AI Writer can get you started. Enter a keyword, choose your title and intro paragraph, and AI Writer will put together a detailed article that’s ready to review and upload.

Of course, it’s essential to fact-check the AI content you create for accuracy. I also recommend editing it to relay your own experiences, cite expert sources, and provide additional insight.
